Classroom is the 1st of TWO stages students must complete prior to earning their driver's license,
and where they will be introduced to the Illinois Rules of the Road.
Over the course of 9 weeks, students will learn the following:
- Introductory driving techniques and car control maneuvers.
- Street signs, traffic laws, lane line markings, and traffic signals.
- How to share the roadway with others vehicles, pedestrians, and roadway users,
- Do's & Don'ts of traffic stops w/ a police officer.
- Characteristics related to driving in different roadway locations (city driving vs. rural/country driving).
- An understanding of how to handle various driving emergencies/hazardous weather conditions.
- The dangerous effects associated with choosing to drive while impaired or under the influence of drugs/alcohol,
- Steps to take when involved in a vehicle crash or accident.
- Personal responsibilities that come with buying, maintaining, and insuring their own car.
After the completion of this stage, students will have earned the privilege to obtain their instructional driver's permit.

** CLASSROOM driver's education IS A GRADUATION REQUIREMENT @ DUNLAP HIGH SCHOOL! **
With that said, any student and/or parent who wishes or is planning on their son/daughter taking the BTW portion at a private driving school or facility, may due so.
Please inform Coach Simmons of this decision, by the end of their classroom portion, if this is the option you wish to pursue. His/Her name will be removed from the BTW List.

classroom REQUIREMENTS:
1. Students must be at least 15 years of age – (14 upon request).
2. Students must have successfully passed 8 courses/Classes in the previous two semesters.
CLASSROOM GOAL:
The ultimate goal of Driver’s Education is to help save lives, and reduce motor vehicle accidents and
collisions through the development of our future roadway users. To do this, students will be taught necessary information to build a strong foundation of knowledge, skills, habits, and attitudes to become safe drivers.

CLASSROOM ATTENDANCE:
Under Illinois State Law, students enrolled in an approved Classroom Driver’s Education course are required to complete AND pass thirty (30) clock hours of instruction. If a student misses more than six (6) classes, excused or unexcused, he/she will be removed from the class, and placed into the next available quarter. |
CLASSROOM GRADES:
1. For a student to be eligible to take the Illinois State Written Permit Test, he/she must have a passing overall grade (65% or higher). If a student is not passing the class, at the time the State Permit Test is given, he/she will NOT be eligible to take it, and will be required to complete their attempts at the DMV following the end of the quarter. 2. For a student to be eligible to take the Illinois State Cooperative Driving Test, he/she must earn either an overall grade of “A” or “B” in the classroom portion. Any student who finishes with an overall grade of “C,” will still be eligible to take BTW, but he/she will be required to take the I.S.C.D.T. at the DMV upon (1) turning SIXTEEN years old, AND (2) having held his/her instructional driver’s permit for a total of NINE consecutive months. |
